Circle Lock vs Padlock

What Type of Lock Should You Use for Your Storage Unit?

Choose Security: Why the Right Lock Matters

When it comes to protecting your belongings, the type of lock you choose can make a big difference. While there are many options available, not all locks offer the same level of security. We strongly recommend using a circle lock (also known as a disc lock) over traditional padlocks or other styles.

Why We Recommend Circle/Disc Locks

  • Superior Security: Circle locks are designed with a smaller, shielded shackle that makes them extremely difficult to cut with bolt cutters. Unlike padlocks, they don’t leave much of the shackle exposed, which drastically reduces the risk of forced entry.
  • Harder to Remove: These locks are tough—really tough. Even if someone attempts to break in, disc locks are built to resist tampering, prying, and drilling. Many break-in attempts fail simply because the lock can't be removed without professional tools and a lot of time.
  • Padlocks Are Easier Targets: While padlocks are common, they’re also much easier to defeat. Their exposed shackle makes them vulnerable to bolt cutters, and they can sometimes be picked or popped with minimal effort. For maximum protection, we do not recommend using a standard padlock on your unit.

Where to Buy a Disc Lock

Disc locks are widely available and easy to find. You can purchase one at most local hardware stores, such as Home Depot, Lowe’s, or Ace Hardware. They’re also available at big-box retailers and through online stores like Amazon. Just make sure to choose a high-quality, weather-resistant model for best results.

Our Recommendation

We encourage all our tenants to use a high-quality disc lock for their storage unit. In fact, many self-storage insurance providers specifically recommend them for their security advantages.
